The Case for Confession
Excerpted from "The Case for Confession" by Father Kenneth Brown, published
in the February 2005 issue of Liguorian. Reprinted with permission from Liguorian,
One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO 63057.
Anyone who is in relationship with other people — and who isn't? — finds that
forgiveness is something human beings desire. So what keeps us away from
the sacrament of reconciliation? Parents who hope to be the best of religious
educators for their children do well to examine honestly the barriers they imagine
standing between them and their own reception of the sacrament of reconciliation.
We have to remember that God, like an ever-loving parent, takes us just the way we are.
Some people really want to receive the sacrament, but they let the time that
has elapsed since they last received it stop them. But it is never too late to
return to the sacrament.
I recommend that we all go to the sacrament often enough so that when we really
need the sacrament — its tenderness and its grace — it doesn't feel like an alien
or strange experience. It should feel like coming home.
All of us sin and need forgiveness. Ours is a God who heals, a physician who
binds up our wounded hearts, a loving parent who forgives and embraces the
child who has wandered off. How could we not want this for ourselves and
all those we love?
Father Kenneth Brown is pastor of Little Flower Catholic Church in St. Louis,
Missouri. He has been a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis for 28 years.
